The Microgrant Pilot Program is intended to support professional artists and cultural practitioners in B.C. to adapt either an existing work or their professional practice to respond to emergent needs or changes in the arts and culture sector. The goal of the program is to help individuals in the sector with their creative development and the sustainability of their practice, including the use of new technologies or digital opportunities. Grants should be in alignment with the strategic directions of the BC Arts Council.
Awards of up to $1,500 are available.
The pilot has been possible by a generous donation from the Yosef Wosk Family Foundation, the timing of which has allowed us to use this initiative in support of the BC Arts Council’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Who Can Apply
Assistance through this program is available to professional artists and cultural practitioners.
To be eligible, you must:
Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and have lived in British Columbia as a resident for at least twelve months immediately prior to application.
Be a professional artist or cultural practitioner in the disciplines of creative writing, dance (performance, choreography), media arts (film, video, audio/sound art and new media), multi- and interdisciplinary practice, museology and conservation, music (performance, composition), publishing, theatre (performance, design, directing, technical), or visual arts (creation, curation).
If unsure, contact a program officer regarding the eligibility of your discipline or practice.
Have completed basic training in your discipline (not necessarily in academic institutions).
Not be enrolled in full-time studies.
In order to demonstrate professional status, applicants should meet the following criteria:
Be recognized by other practitioners working in similar disciplines.
Have a practice in their discipline and recognized body of work of two or more years subsequent to basic training.
Be committed to working full-time at their practice when financially possible.
How to Apply
To ensure funds are with artists as soon as possible, applications will be accessed on a rolling basis every two weeks.
All applicants must be registered in the BCAC Online Grant Application System. It is highly recommended to read the entire How to Apply Online before starting this process.
Registration requests, once completed in the online system, can take up to 4 business days to be approved by BCAC staff.
Applicants must submit a complete online application, including all requested information and support material. All support material must be submitted via the online system unless otherwise indicated.
